Last week I received a letter from [personal profile] redsnake05  and 3 lovely gifts in it <3 The first gift was a beautiful wooden hanging decoration, shaped to look like a paw! It looks so cool!! (And currently hangs from a frame that I use to store and show most of my craft gifts, merch, and postcards :D)

1

the second and third items were two wooden bookmarks, painted to look like the water and with quotes about the ocean written on them :D I'll use them for a next book with ocean/sea/water/pirates/mermaids/etc I read <3

Redsnake, thank you so much for everything!

Last week I got the postal delivery note and as I was expecting it to be either a zine, or oriami flowers. I was very surprised to see giant box waiting for me. It was my gift from the previous year’s round of the exchane, a package from [personal profile] tjs_whatnot  !

I opened it and inside of the box, there was a second box, this time lovely decorated with papers and shells (some of them fall in travel, so I’m gonna glue them back after I get more glue sticks :D) and a letter in a really nice card!

When I opened the second box, I saw colored Mucha’s illustration, surrounded by quilled patterns. The bottom part was decorated in sea-related-pattered-papers, small glassy stonens and more shells. The whole decoration is beautiful and looks even better in real life than in a photo!

Then I picked the set for stamping wax. I really like the colors of the wax and the wavy design on the seal. I'm so excited to use them for something!

After that I opened the envelope with Sherlock Holmes’ profile on it. (At first I thought it was a cute collage artwork on a cardboard, matching the box with colors, then I realised there’s something inside and I was like ‘aaaaah! I pack half of the stuff I do in the same way, I 'met' someone who does the same thing!! Aaaaa!’ :D).

Inside of the envelope, there were more envelopes with amazing, handmade stationary papers inside! And the envelopes were decorated with patterned papers as well!! And some of the letter pages had printed text of ‘Scandal in Bohemia’ as the lines and other had small art noveau illustrations attached on their margins! so cute and briliant!!!

the back of the papers are, I think, pour-painted with acrylics and they have this marble like effects! They look beautiful!!!

I'm gonna treasure them all before I use them <3
TJ, thank you so much for all of the gifts!!!! They are all fantastic and I love them so much!!!!!! You hit so many of my fandom and non-fandom likes and I still can't stop smiling when I'm writing this, even when I opened the package a few days ago :D THANK YOU!!!

Hey everyone! I am so sorry for the radio silence here in this community the last couple of months without doing a wrap-up or asking if there were outstanding crafting projects in the works. So, I know it's late, but please do be letting me know if there is anything a miss.

We've had a couple of kerfuffles this year, so if you haven't heard from your recipient in the form of a thank you, please let us know that too. Also, if you haven't gotten the chance to thank you crafter, please take this opportunity to do that.

If you haven't posted about what you created (or received if you like) please do that as well. I could use the cheer up. I, myself will be doing that before the end of the week.

That being said, I'm sure it will come as no surprise to anyone when we announce that we will be taking a hiatus this coming year. We've both been stretched pretty thin with real-life commitments and, I for one, feel I didn't give this exchange the time and effort it needed to keep it running smoothly. I do like creating things for people though, so maybe we can brainstorm some way to do that for each other in some capacity that doesn't take all the backstage organizing and responsibility. We're open to ideas.

Again, thank you all for participating! I hope you found it worthwhile. Hope to see you again in the future.

Better late than never! I meant to post this earlier in the week, but time got away from me and my poor old computer finally died, so I had to wait for this new and shiny one to arrive. Anyway, here is what I made.

Made for [personal profile] tigerweave. She is interested in historical clothes, history bounding, cats, violin, Celtic singing horses, dance, butterflies, flowers and gardens.

So here's the flip through video of the journal!

I had such a blast during this year's round of H2H! Not only did I get some incredible jewelry from [personal profile] alessandriana (here's a post with pictures on my journal) I got to break out my sewing machine for a set of travel-themed projects for [personal profile] yourlibrarian (and here's that post).

I also realized as I was writing those posts that I never got pictures posted from last year's round, so if anyone's interested, you can check out those pictures here.

All in all, this was so much fun, and I can't wait for next year!

I received my gifts yesterday, and after letting elegantstupidity know, they said they'd be making a post on their own journal that they'd link but that I should go ahead with pictures. So here they are! Read more... )

My gift was from [personal profile] redsnake05 and I love it!

"I thought you might enjoy a Vault of your own, and the seagull fabric was too cute to resist. The bird spoon and spreader are made from NZ native rimu with a beeswax polish."

I love it all! I'm already thinking how to hang the Vault symbol and display the little utensils. And the seagull fabric *is* cute. :D

I was paired with [personal profile] alessandriana this year, who gave me a whole host of fandoms to work from and also a list of favorite colors that very closely matched my own. Many of those fandoms were book fandoms. I started by pondering what image I could work with from the Vorkosigan Saga--but the Vorkosigan family crest is canonically brown, and she said she didn't like browns, while Vorpatril's crest (she said Ivan was her favorite character) has as far as I can tell never been described at all. Lacking imagery, I decided to go with a quote. "Forward Momentum!" was just about the perfect length for a bracelet . . . or, since she said she didn't like bracelets, a bookmark.

[Photographing it was a little tricky, since the beads are extremely sparkly.]

She also expressed interest in Stargate. I am not really in Stargate fandom, but I've seen enough episodes to have a clear mental picture of the iconic gate, and I decided with a little work that I could recreate it using beads as a pendant:

I finished up with a necklace in all of her favorite jewel tones: teal, purple, cobalt, and raspberry. She mentioned a metal allergy and I wasn't sure about the exact composition of any of my findings, so I skipped a clasp and made it long enough to go over the head, just in case.

Finally, I do not know the Dreamwidth name of my gifter (please speak up if you like!) but as she hasn't posted pictures yet, I will share the gorgeous beret and short scarf I received. The scarf's lacy ends make it look kind of like a cravat if I style it right, and I can't wait for it to be winter again so I can wear it. (I have worn the beret a few times anyway, even though the temperatures are currently well into the 90s.)

As usual I enjoyed taking part in this year's H2H Challenge on Dreamwidth. I took three central things from my recipient's list – a preference for bunnies, bright colors (a bluish purple if at all possible) and a focus on cute. My second concern was then mixing up the results so that there would be both short and long necklaces as well as "heavier" and "lighter" styles.

One early roadblock was a dislike of orange, which was unfortunate because when it comes to creating brightly colored jewelry, pink and orange tend to do particularly well in making for a lively looking item. Also, purple, even a bluish purple, often makes for a darker look. For example, this following necklace was not sent to the recipient, because despite using some lavender toned and sparkly beads in an all purple necklace, the effect was not bright. Read more... )

My recipient this round was the lovely Star ([personal profile] dirtygreatknife) in Australia, and they have finally received my package. Star told me to go a head and post the pictures I took, which would give their aging computer a bit of breather.

Star said they loves both Egyptian Revival and weird jewelry, and both are dead center in my wheelhouse. I've been collecting Egyptian Revival pieces for about 30 years and was glad for the chance to use a few of them. And since some of the ones I used are distinctly weird, it was a double checkmark on the "what I like" list.

I freely admit I went a little overboard. Once I started making, I had a hard time stopping...

I started with the Nefretiti lariat style necklace, which is a pastiche of three different 1920’s Egyptian revival Czech glass bead necklaces that I’d collected over the years, and restrung and hand-knotted on silk thread.

The earrings are made from matching Czech glass beads and pendants, and since Star's signup didn’t say "no earrings" I figured that they do wear earrings. They are reversible, party in the front or business in the front. Unfortunately, Star doesn't wear earrings, but they have figured out how to wear them as pendants on the cord necklace shown below.

The bracelet uses the same beads and pattern as the earrings, but is not reversible, unfortunately (I tried, but there’s just to much heft in the front).

The star pendant was a fun experiment, and I’d just planned on tossing that in as an extra and sending everything off, but it was still too soon to mail...

So I got to looking around my stash and found the supremely ugly Pharaoh. Since Star had said they liked weird jewelry, so I went with that. In their confirmation emails, they told me that they are very pleased with the oddity of it. It’s from the 1920s, same vintage as the Nefretiti necklace.

That and the little star pendant will go on the braided blue necklace, which is an 8-cord kumihimo.

I am so thrilled that the package arrived safe in the Land Down Under and I can't wait for next year's exchange.

Sent your parcel? Want some quick fun while you wait? It's time to sign up for a madness round!

I've received my delightful parcel (more about that later!), and TJ and I did some planning for our first ever madness round.

We're thinking that this would be a very short round - no more than three weeks crafting time (about as long as the parcels to and from the antipodes might take), with everyone in a group making things for all the others and receiving something from all the others. Items can be anything you might make for a small, quick gift.

Sign ups: Sign up today! Open till the 14th. On the 14th, we'll email everyone who signed up with the names and addresses of all the others who signed up who are in their group

Crafting: Start as soon as you want! There is no individual matching, though you can personalise as much or as little as you like.

Post: By June 3rd

What can I craft?
Whatever you want, but we're obviously thinking small, quick to make and cheap to send. Since you only have a short time frame, we're not requiring items be matched to the exact tastes of those in your exchange group.

I would love to, but I can only commit to a certain number of participants. What if too many sign up?
We're currently thinking of setting up groups with overlap, like fannish venn diagrams. You set the number of people you're willing to send to and sort that out into groups. The mods believe they can make this work with the power of mathematics.

I would love to, but I have postal restrictions or allergies or can't receive a certain common craft
We will do our best to sort groups by interest as well as by size, but, given the tight timeframe and the quick, light, fun ethos, we can't guarantee that you'll get things that suit and we definitely can't guarantee all postage will be within your part of the world. If you're not happy to receive whatever random mixture you get, this won't be your thing. If you're not willing to post internationally, please don't sign up.

I got a package of wonderful treasures from [personal profile] c_art today and I'm absolutely over the moon!

I took photos as I unboxed, to share the experience with you all, so please proceed beneath the cut )

To say I am overwhelmed is putting it mildly. Thank you so much to [personal profile] c_art, you've made my, like, entire month. It's just absolute perfection and I will treasure everything dearly. I'm going to figure out a way to display Gandalf properly on a little shelf (so the cats can't get to him). He is one of my favourite characters from LOTR and he's rendered here so beautifully in a form that I can cuddle. :D

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hey Everyone,

The survey went out last week. Thank you for the over half of you who have already completed it! If the rest of you would like to fill it out before the end of the week (we're starting matching this weekend and we'd like them by then, please) that would be lovely. It's not required, of course, but it is extremely helpful. If you haven't received the survey, comment here and we'll get whatever is going on with your/our email sorted.

You can always email us at homemade2homemademod@gmail.com with any questions, concerns or suggestions.

This is going to be an awesome round! I can already tell. ♥ ♥

You can find the outline and FAQs here

2021 dates
Jan 22nd - Feb 5th: sign ups open
Feb 5th - 9th: initial survey/preferences va google form
Feb 19th: Assignments out (at the latest - we'd aim to have them out earlier!)
March 19th: Check in one (please tell us, via email or on the comm post, that you're on track)
April 23rd: Check in two, and addresses go out
May 14th: Posting deadline

Please copy and paste the text from the box below into a comment.

Please remember that this year, with us sending out a survey to help with matching, we need more information about both what you like and what you make. Feel free to include links etc. When we send out the survey, it will ask you for the names of people you would love to receive craft from, those you'd like to make craft for, and those you're not a compatible match with. These surveys will be private to the mods only.

Name: We don’t need your real name right now. We'll ask for that when we get your address for your crafter.
Email: PLEASE make sure it’s one that you check regularly. There are a few times throughout the fest that we will need to get a hold of you via email.
Things you love: We need to know what hobbies, interests and fandoms make you happy. Please be specific as you can, from favorite color, favorite character, favorite song, etc etc...You don’t want a Gryffindor scarf if you’re in Slytherin now do you? Or let's say you put that one of your interests is horses, but you are terrified of unicorns, you wouldn’t want any of those showing up on an embroidered thing, would you? Also, if you don’t want fandom related things, or only want fandom related things, let us know that too. Same goes for interests and hobbies.
Any allergies/postal restrictions/simple DNWs: Allergies--we need to know all the things you can’t have from food allergies to scents and fibers. Postal restrictions--are there things your country won’t let be sent through the mail? Sometimes this differs if the packages are sent internationally or within the same country. Simple Do Not Wants--This is the place to put things you just don’t like, crafts you really don’t want to receive. It's too hot for woollens? Don’t want to receive the same type of craft that you make? This is the place to tell us.
What kind of crafter are you? What are you willing to gift? Are you a potter or a woodworker? A knitter or a junk journaller? Do you dabble in a bunch of things? Are the things connected by medium? If so, are there things you DON’T do? This is a chance to talk about the crafts you love to do.
What country do you live in? and Are you willing to ship internationally? These two go together. If you live outside the USA, and can't ship internationally for whatever reason, we might still be able to match you. Get in touch with the mods to talk more. This year, we need everyone to track their parcels and make sure to tick 'gift' on the customs declaration, thanks!

Welcome to Homemade2Homemade Round 4!

We've had a good long think about how to make this exchange run more smoothly, and we're excited to share. Here's the outline:

You sign up to make a handmade, crafted gift for one of our other participants. You receive a handmade, crafted gift in exchange.

Sign ups are public. We'll need to know about what you like and want in your life and are excited to receive, and also about any allergies, sensitivities and dislikes. We also need to know about what you make and like to craft.

Straight after sign ups, you have the chance to tell us if there are any people you'd be particularly excited to craft for or to receive craft from. We think this will help make matching easier for us, and also give you an opportunity to remind us who you've crafted for before, or if you want to avoid your BFF who will immediately know it's you, for example.

You have 12 weeks to complete your craft and get it in the post. You will need to track your parcel! Postage has not become any quicker or easier in the last year, so please be patient (particularly for international postage).

After the posting deadline, you can sign up for a completely optional madness round. This is supposed to be a short-deadline, small-item exchange, where you make something for all participants and receive something from each as well. Your mods thought it would be fun, especially for those that prefer to make quick, small things.

To sign up for madness, you need to have posted your main exchange gift OR not have signed up for the main exchange. Both your mods are committed to the madness round, so there will be at least three of us!

We know RL has been… interesting for the last year and that many people have found handicrafts to be a great source of comfort and pleasure. We'd love to have you along for the ride this year. Please make sure you have the bandwidth to commit to this exchange.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone sign up?
All varieties of crafters are welcome (see below for two restrictions). If you would give one of your handcrafted items as a gift to another person, then it's okay for this. If you're concerned, take a look at some of the things that have been made previously and gauge your energy and comfort.

What counts as homemade?
There are a few restrictions - no digital art (physical objects only, though getting your digital art printed is okay) and no food (shipping concerns). The majority of the gift should be handmade by you. For example, if you hand knit a scarf, you could include a scarf pin that you bought elsewhere. If you buy a plain t-shirt, tie-dye it and paint it with a cute unicorn, that's all good. Buying a plain t-shirt, tie-dying it and putting purchased badges on it is not all good. If you're not sure, get in touch.

What if I need to drop out?
Please let us know asap. As I'm sure you can appreciate, pinch hitting is a little tricky in a homemade craft exchange, and also costs money in materials and postage. If you're worried you don't have the time or energy for this commitment, please don't sign up. If something unexpected comes up, please let us know so we can sort something out.

If you have dropped out in a previous year, please get in touch before or during sign ups. We do not have an automatic ban, and we'd like to know that you're all good to go this year. We will be in touch if we don't hear from you.

What if I need an extension?
Please let us know asap. Please bear in mind that pinch hitting is tricky, but preferable to a recipient waiting for too long, so be realistic about how much time you need for whatever craft you've chosen.

Will I definitely get a gift if I complete and send my crafted item?
Yes. So long as you complete and send your crafted item to your recipient, you are absolutely guaranteed a gift.

Is this an international exchange?
Yes. You can indicate in your sign up if you can't ship internationally, though that may limit potential matches.

What are the shipping requirements?
If you are shipping domestically, please track your parcel in whatever way is customary in your country.

If you are shipping internationally, we feel your pain. Please make sure you tick 'gift' on the consignment note or customs declaration. If you can, please track your parcel. We know that some countries are difficult to track from, but please ask at your post shop, and also check if there are any known delays (worse than usual).

Is this an anonymous exchange?
Yes. Please don't get in touch with your recipient directly. We are happy to be your go-betweens with any questions you have. Relatedly, please put your DW/online name inside the parcel you send! We have had a few instances where the recipient hasn't been sure who to thank because it's been so secret.

Is there a price limit?
Price equivalents are hard because of all the mediums and levels of skill. But, that being said, we wouldn’t want to break anyone’s bank or waste their time. Make something that you’d be proud to share, to give; that you’d be honored to receive yourself. And if you do receive something that you don’t think matches the value of what you’ve sent, first ask yourself if it was done with the best of intentions at heart before coming to us to voice a complaint.

I just want to do the main exchange/I only want to do the madness round
You can do just the main exchange, just the madness round, or you can do both (assuming you meet the posting deadline)

What counts as a small thing for madness?
We're thinking things that you can make quickly, that are probably small and easy/inexpensive to send. That could mean a small zippered bag, a hand-knitted facecloth or a hand-embroidered card, or whatever else you would make if you were making a bunch of things all at once for a variety of people.

What if a lot of people sign up for madness, and I can only do so much?
In the sign up, we'll ask what your maximum number of people is and make sure we split up into groups or do some kind of jiggery pokery at that point to accommodate that.

I have another question
Please contact your mods on homemade2homemademod@gmail.com
[personal profile] ted_grouper
Are there any plans for a 2021 exchange? I've enjoyed the last two I was part of :)
